Innovating Pedagogical Practices

“Most learning is not the result of instruction. It is rather the result of unhampered participation in a meaningful setting.” - Ivan Illich, Deschooling Society

Innovative and self-reflective pedagogy is central to the RISD Architecture education, and teaching teachers to teach is a departmental priority. Our practice is not simply to ask a student to do an assignment, but rather to contextualize why we are requiring the work we are requiring, and why it is being framed in the way it is being framed. This articulation of pedagogical agendas empowers students in the critique of their own work and that of their peers. Opportunities within the department to teach include student teaching assistantships and experimental Winter Session course offerings led by students.
