DESINE-Lab’s Public Plaza Project

By Carl Lostritto | Jun 25, 2014

RISD’s DESINE-Lab is collaborating this summer with Brown University and Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia to design and build a public plaza and park in Central Falls, RI. Faculty Elizabeth Hermann and Daniel Feldman from RISD and Martin Anzellini from Javeriana along with more than 50 students from the three universities comprise of this summer’s workforce, which has already seen 2 weeks of intensive, laborious, and transformative work on the project’s site, 741 Dexter Street (and Cowden Street). This summer program is also supplemented with lectures, field trips, tours, and fundraising events.

The components of the plaza includes two pavilions – one with a trellis roof and a more defined second space with a folded roofing system – a large mural representing the culture and history of Central Falls, generous green and planting spaces, seating areas, and a sweeping ramp that weaves all together.

As a first step at transforming Central Falls following Spring 2014’s LDAR studio designing a master plan of the city, this project hopes to not only provide a public open park aimed at enhancing the community and its public spaces, but also act as a catalyst to drive further and deeper change to the city’s urban environment from within.
