Postcard from Istanbul

By Gabriel Feld | Jun 05, 2014

My dear colleagues and students,

We just had the opening for the installation of RISD’s Moveable Studio in Istanbul. It was an intense and exciting week of work with local alumni. We got together on Sunday evening and from there on it was an explosion of ideas (my favorite included a dancing bear, a long tradition here, but banned now.) We held several design workshops at SALT–one of the most prestigious art and design venues in Istanbul–that culminated with an elaborate structure of some 500 white balloons raising 25 feet in the main space of Kadir Has University along the Golden Horn.

The Moveable Studio was a wonderful opportunity to work together with RISD alumni in Istanbul: Kerim Bozkurt, Fatos Diplan, Melisa Ekemen, Rezzan Hasoglu, Jesse Honsa, Deniz Manisali Leba, Sabine Rividi, Itir Saran, Ali Turker, Can Can Unstundag and Mert Yilmaz.

I was also invited to give two lectures at Bilgi University, where I got a chance to meet with very interesting faculty and talk about future collaborations. This city is full of opportunities! I hope that the Moveable Studio will be only a first step for RISD’s involvement in Istanbul.

Now it’s on to Seoul for the next Moveable Studio (June 15-21.) I’ll keep you posted. Hope everything is well with you. Stay in touch. Kind regards,

Gabriel Feld, May of 2014
