Winter Session Studio Extends Techstyle Haus Research Into Urban Context

By Jonathan Knowles | Jan 20, 2015

This advanced studio will work from research developed over the past two years for the RISD/ BROWN/ FHE entry into the 2014 Solar Decathlon. The prototype house was designed for the Domaine de Boisbuchet and was exhibited in Versailles, France. We will first analyze and then draw lessons from the Techstyle Haus project to provide both specific facts on the systems deployed and a conceptual framework for understanding ways in which the systems reduce resource exploitation.

We will spend the first week traveling in order to experience projects that represent models of ideal living in their time – from Le Corbusier’s Unite in Nantes to the Abbey Fontevraud in the Loire Valley.

We will use this research to address the problem of urban development in an agrarian economy. We will design approximately 250 units of housing in the village of Lessac, France. The site is located adjacent to farm fields and a river basin. Students will be asked to study the seam between agriculture and urban infrastructures in order to propose a self-reliant village; where density is encouraged and living patterns are made interdependent through the form of the architecture.
