Peter at The Arnold Arboretum

This studio is taught by Professor Peter Tagiuri.
Woods given as an origin for architecture is an old discourse.
They have always inspired us; shelter above and space between.
Architecture cultivates a clearing within the forest, divides itself between furniture and building,
between movable and fixed, between meuble and immeuble.
The material of trees, WOOD,
has the capacity to span, burn and float has been forever augmented and transformed by human ingenuity.
The studio began by stepping back: to dwell in and amongst the trees,
to explore the forest floor and canopy above to Stand Between Trees.

The wood studio sat Tables of our own making in wood (scale 1:1). Wood as furniture mediates between the warmth and measure of the human body and the cool durability of the floor and walls around us. Like a sheet of paper the table is a space of thought and production, the table too is a kind of elevated common where we come together for companionship and to iron out differences, to negotiate.

In the remaining weeks, the studio will a make a roof that spans beyond the capacity of individual members, a roof that shelters and sheds. The context for roofs is within a village in China. Information about the village and design methodology is shared between RISD’s Wood Studio and an architecture studio taught through the China Academy of Art.
